Texture Patterned Vases
This series began after a potter from California contacted me a year ago asking for an update on a glaze recipe that I'd published 20 years ago. I looked up his work and was inspired by the patterned textures on his pieces, so I began to try variations on the ideas that he seemed to be using. For the patterns, I use all sorts of tools to impress textures. Many of them are rolled on to the surface, the wet clay of a freshly made piece, then I carefully stretch it out until it is so thin that it is about to rip. Often the walls do tear through and I patch them. I count on the glaze or colored clay coating to highlight the texture of the forms.
